On December 23, 2024, Jiwon Sohn of OpenNet Korea participated as a panelist in the “Forum on Advancing Social Rights.” Sohn emphasized the critical role of the Internet in self-expression, democratic participation, and the realization of fundamental human rights. She underscored the necessity of ensuring equal access for all members of society, as digital inclusion is essential for a dignified and equitable life.

Sohn outlined two key dimensions of Internet access: “infrastructure access” and “information access”. She stressed that equal access to networks and services must be safeguarded through explicit guarantees of net neutrality and legislative measures. Meanwhile, the right to access information entails free, uncensored, and unfiltered access to online content, necessitating reforms and the abolition of restrictive Internet censorship systems.

Furthermore, to achieve meaningful digital access, proactive measures must be taken to support digitally and informationally disadvantaged individuals. To fulfill this goal society should expand educational opportunities to enhance digital skills and ensure that all citizens receive digital media literacy education to navigate and engage with online information effectively.
