Submitted Opposition to the Amendment on the Act On Press Arbitration And Damage Remedies, which provides for punitive damage for the press

On June 20, 2024, Open Net Korea submitted the following opposition to the proposed amendment to the Act on Press Arbitration and Damage Remedies (by Parliamentary Member Jung Chung-rae, Bill No. 2200058), which seeks to introduce punitive damages for malicious media coverage.

The bill should be withdrawn as it is highly likely to violate freedom of speech and expression in violation of the principle of constitutional clarity and the principle of excessive funding, and would significantly curtail the media’s ability to promptly raise suspicions and provide critical reporting, particularly against public figures and corporations.
