On 23 and 24 May 2024, Open Net and the Taiwan Association for Human Rights (TAHR) co-hosted a two-day lecture and workshop on the topic of targeted advertising and protecting privacy.
The second-day workshop was mainly focused on targeted advertising as a starting point to explore possible amendments to the Taiwanese Personal Data Protection Law. As a first speaker, Hongki delivered the South Korean case to the Personal Data Protecting Committee (PDPC) fined Google and Meta for collecting off-site data without explicit consent and requiring service users to consent to providing personal data from third parties. KS introduced the concept of the Personal Data Protection Act involved in targeted advertising. Prof. Su Hui-chieh from National Taiwan University also participated in the workshop alongside Hongki and KS. Hui-chieh expanded the Taiwan Personal Data Protection Act and what aspects and details of the Taiwanese Personal Data Protection Act should be revised and aware. TAHR also organized a closed group discussion with the audience which helped them to understand the issue further after the speech.
